Germany has formally charged a Syrian man in connection with a stabbing at Berlin's Holocaust Memorial, which left a Spanish tourist seriously wounded. The incident, occurring in February, is linked to the suspect's alleged intentions to join the militant Islamic State group, according to the federal prosecutor.

The accused, identified only as Wassim Al M due to German privacy laws, purportedly sent a photo of himself to IS members before carrying out the attack as a means for the group to claim responsibility. The charges, filed on July 18 and announced Tuesday, include attempted murder and trying to join a terrorist organization.

Authorities reported that the attack was motivated by intentions to target Jews and took place days ahead of a German national election, which escalated the migration debate. The assault occurred at a memorial commemorating the Holocaust, emphasizing the gravity and provocative nature of the attack.
