Arbitrary Arrests: Tribal Organizations Demand Justice in Manipur

Two tribal organizations in Manipur have raised concerns over the arrests of two Hmar community members, suspected in last year's killings of six Meitei people. Criticizing the NIA and Assam Police for alleged unjust actions, tribal groups demanded the release of the accused, citing a lack of criminal background.

Two tribal organizations from Manipur voiced their concerns on Saturday regarding the detention of two individuals belonging to the Hmar community. These arrests are linked to last year's killings of six Meitei people in Jiribam district, an incident these organizations label as a result of arbitrary enforcement by investigating authorities.

The Churachandpur district-based Hmar Women Association condemned the arrests of Thanglienlal Hmar and Lalrosang Hmar, emphasizing that these men, who are fathers and daily wage earners, have no past criminal records. They were apprehended by a joint operation involving the Assam Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The Kuki Zo Council also criticized the action, insisting the due process was overlooked and called for their immediate release. The arrests highlight persistent ethnic tensions, as the original incident involving the Meitei involved the deaths of 10 militants, exacerbating conflict between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups, leading Assam to bolster security measures.
