Police have filed four cases against over 500 individuals, detaining 17 for arson and property damage during clashes in Pune's Yavat village, triggered by an objectionable post, officials reported on Saturday. The youth responsible for the post has also been arrested, with a separate case registered against him.
Communal tension rose in Yavat on Friday afternoon. Angry residents, incited by the social media post, engaged in vandalism and arson, targeting vehicles, a religious structure, and a bakery. Police have identified over 100 suspects among the mob and enforced tear gas and lathi-charge to regain control.
A preventive order is now in place in Yavat as the situation stabilizes. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the post, allegedly concerning a Hindu priest in a rape case, and warned of strict action against those spreading hate. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar identified the offender as a daily wage laborer from Nanded.
