Tensions Rise as Bolsonaro Faces House Arrest Over Alleged Coup Plot
Brazil's Supreme Court has placed former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest amid allegations of a coup plot. Justice Alexandre de Moraes cited Bolsonaro's non-compliance with judicial orders. The court banned his visitors and cell phone use, partly in response to Trump's purported interference.
Brazil's political landscape faces intensified pressures as the Supreme Court orders house arrest for former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of orchestrating a coup plan after his 2022 electoral defeat.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes cited Bolsonaro's failure to adhere to prior judicial restrictions. As a result, Bolsonaro faces bans on visitors, save for legal counsel and court-approved individuals, and is prohibited from using cell phones, directly or indirectly.
These measures follow allegations that Bolsonaro sought the aid of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently linked new tariffs on Brazilian imports to what he described as a 'witch hunt' against Bolsonaro.
