ED Raids: Unraveling the Web of Alleged Corruption in Assam's Education Sector

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at properties linked to retired IAS officer Sewali Devi Sharma in connection with a disproportionate assets case in Assam. The probe involves allegations of financial mismanagement during her tenure with the state educational council, involving unapproved expenditures and dubious contract awards.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday carried out a series of searches at locations associated with retired IAS officer Sewali Devi Sharma, in connection to a disproportionate assets case, according to an official source.

At least eight premises linked to Sharma were raided. Sharma, a former executive chairman and director of the Assam State Council of Educational Research and Training, was previously charged for allegedly possessing assets worth Rs 5.7 crore beyond her known income sources.

Investigations revealed Sharma allegedly operated multiple bank accounts without state approval, directing over Rs 105 crore in unexplained expenditures. These funds were purportedly funnelled to entities managed by associates or family, without adhering to procurement protocols, raising concerns of corrupt practices in Assam's education sector.
