Justice K Vinod Chandran of the Supreme Court announced his recusal from a case involving Professor Naima Khatoon's appointment as Aligarh Muslim University's vice-chancellor. The appointment is under scrutiny due to alleged 'conflict of interest' since her husband, the former vice-chancellor, cast a decisive vote.
The bench, including Justices Chandran and NV Anjaria, considered the petition filed by Muzaffar Uruj Rabbani challenging the Allahabad High Court's decision that upheld Khatoon's historic appointment as the first woman to hold the position. Justice Chandran reasoned his recusal due to a similar role he played in a previous chancellor appointment process.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioner, questioned the integrity of the selection process, arguing the outcome was unduly influenced by two key votes. Despite Solicitor General Tushar Mehta's assertion of trust in Justice Chandran's judgment, the Chief Justice directed the matter be reassigned to ensure impartiality.
