Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today received Mr Wang Yi, Member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Foreign Minister, during his official visit to India. The meeting marks another step in the ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and China, two of Asia’s largest powers, at a time of both cooperation and complex challenges.
Invitation to the SCO Summit
During the meeting, Wang Yi conveyed a message and formal invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Prime Minister Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled to take place in Tianjin, China.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed his gratitude to President Xi and confirmed his participation, affirming India’s support for China’s presidency of the SCO. He expressed his eagerness to meet President Xi in Tianjin and to strengthen the role of the SCO as a platform for regional cooperation and stability.
Positive Momentum in Bilateral Relations
Wang Yi also shared his positive assessment of his bilateral meetings with External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and the 24th Meeting of the Special Representatives on the Boundary Question, which he co-chaired with National Security Adviser Shri Ajit Doval.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the “steady and positive progress” in bilateral relations since his meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year. The two leaders had agreed then to work towards rebuilding trust and fostering cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity.
A significant milestone in this renewed engagement has been the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, a long-standing demand from Indian pilgrims and a gesture symbolising goodwill and cultural connection between the two countries.
Emphasis on Border Peace and Stability
Prime Minister Modi underlined that the maintenance of peace and tranquillity on the India-China border remains crucial for the overall development of bilateral relations. He reiterated India’s commitment to finding a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue, which has been a point of friction for decades.
He stressed that stable, predictable, and constructive ties between the two Asian giants would not only benefit their peoples but would also contribute significantly to regional and global peace, stability, and prosperity.
Strategic Significance
The meeting comes against the backdrop of ongoing global uncertainties, shifting power dynamics, and the pressing need for regional cooperation on issues such as counter-terrorism, trade, connectivity, and climate change.
The SCO, which includes major Eurasian powers, provides a platform for India and China to engage constructively despite bilateral differences. For India, balancing competition with cooperation will be key to ensuring that relations remain pragmatic and forward-looking.
Looking Ahead
Prime Minister Modi’s acceptance of President Xi’s invitation signals India’s readiness to deepen engagement within multilateral frameworks, while also keeping dialogue channels open on sensitive bilateral issues.
The upcoming SCO Summit in Tianjin is expected to serve as an important forum where India and China, along with other member states, can deliberate on security, economic integration, and sustainable development in Eurasia.
As both nations cautiously move forward, the emphasis remains on ensuring that diplomacy, dialogue, and mutual sensitivity guide the trajectory of one of the world’s most consequential bilateral relationships.
