The Plate Cutting Ceremony of Yard 16404, the fourth vessel in a series of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) being built for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), was held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai, on August 20, 2025. This milestone highlights India's increasing capability in indigenous shipbuilding and reaffirms its vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the defence sector.
A Leap Forward in Indigenous Shipbuilding
The NGOPVs, each measuring 117 meters in length, are designed, developed, and built entirely within India. They are capable of achieving speeds of up to 23 knots and possess an impressive operational range of 5,000 nautical miles, enabling long-duration deployments across India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and beyond.
These advanced ships will play a pivotal role in bolstering the ICG's operational readiness for a wide spectrum of maritime missions, including surveillance, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, fisheries protection, search and rescue (SAR), and marine environment protection.
Cutting-Edge Features for Future-Ready Operations
The NGOPVs represent a leap in technology integration for India's maritime forces. Each vessel will be fitted with:
-
AI-based predictive maintenance systems to ensure maximum operational availability.
-
Remote piloted drones for extended surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
-
An Integrated Bridge System (IBS) for seamless navigation control.
-
An Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for efficient ship operations.
With the capacity to accommodate 11 officers and 110 personnel, these ships are designed for sustained missions, offering greater endurance and crew comfort.
Aligned with Aatmanirbhar Bharat Vision
The NGOPV project was contracted on December 20, 2023, under the 'Buy (Indian–IDDM)' category, which prioritizes Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured defence projects. The initiative is a direct reflection of India's drive to reduce dependence on imports and enhance domestic shipbuilding expertise.
By executing such projects, India is not only strengthening its maritime security architecture but also creating opportunities for MSMEs, ancillary industries, and the larger defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Ceremony in Mumbai Marks Key Milestone
The Plate Cutting Ceremony was presided over by Inspector General NG Raveendran, Deputy Director General (Technical), Headquarters ICG Eastern Seaboard. He was joined by Mr. A. Vinod, Executive Director (Shipbuilding) at MDL, along with senior officials from both ICG and MDL.
Speaking at the event, officials emphasized that the NGOPV program demonstrates India's growing defence industrial strength and reflects the trust placed in MDL, one of the nation's leading shipbuilders with a rich legacy of constructing frontline naval warships and submarines.
Strengthening India's Maritime Security
India's maritime domain, stretching across 7,500 km of coastline and covering over 2 million sq. km of EEZ, presents unique security and monitoring challenges. The NGOPVs will enable the ICG to:
-
Conduct long-range surveillance missions.
-
Respond swiftly to maritime emergencies and natural disasters.
-
Counter non-traditional security threats, including illegal fishing, trafficking, and smuggling.
-
Strengthen environmental and pollution response mechanisms.
The induction of these vessels will significantly expand the Coast Guard's operational footprint, reinforcing India's position as a responsible maritime power in the Indo-Pacific.
Looking Ahead
With the fourth vessel now under construction, the NGOPV series is progressing as scheduled. Once all six vessels are delivered, the Indian Coast Guard will have a modern and technologically advanced platform fleet, boosting its mission effectiveness and contributing to the overarching goal of maritime safety, security, and sustainability.
The NGOPV project marks another step toward India's vision of becoming a global hub for defence shipbuilding and an exporter of maritime platforms to friendly nations in the years ahead.
