Sikkim Strengthens Disaster Preparedness with Community Empowerment

Marking 14 years since a devastating earthquake, he highlighted community empowerment, resilience, and the appointment of 1,185 officials to improve disaster preparedness.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang underscored the government's commitment to disaster preparedness on Thursday, highlighting safety as a priority. Speaking on State Disaster Risk Reduction Day, he reflected on the region's history of natural calamities and the valuable lessons learned.

This annual observance, coinciding with the 14th anniversary of the 2011 earthquake that severely impacted Sikkim, serves as a solemn reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The chief minister emphasized the need for vigilance and preparedness against both natural and human-induced hazards.

Tamang announced the appointment of 1,185 Disaster Management Officials to bolster preparedness efforts. He encouraged citizens to participate in mock exercises, training, and awareness programs to ensure every household, educational institution, and community is equipped for potential emergencies.
