China Cracks Down on Kuaishou and Weibo for Content Management Failures
China's Cyberspace Administration has reprimanded Kuaishou and Weibo for inadequate content management, focusing on their trending lists. Actions include warnings and required rectifications. Weibo is engaging in self-regulation, while Kuaishou has yet to respond. This comes amid a broader investigation into Kuaishou's e-commerce practices.
China's internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), has taken disciplinary steps against live-streaming platform Kuaishou and social media giant Weibo over content management lapses.
Official statements from the CAC on Saturday revealed that the measures would involve summoning company representatives, delivering formal warnings, and mandating corrective actions within a specific timeline. The CAC criticized both platforms for not managing their content effectively, highlighting recurring problematic entries in their trending sections related to celebrity gossip and personal updates.
In response, Weibo expressed a commitment to correct these issues, establishing a special task force to enforce strict content governance. Meanwhile, Kuaishou refrained from commenting. The enforcement actions coincide with an investigation by China's market regulator into Kuaishou's e-commerce arm for potential legal violations.
