Ladakh's Quest for Peace Amid Rising Tensions

In the volatile region of Ladakh, bordered by both Pakistan and China, Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta has declared an unwavering commitment to peace. This dedication comes in light of the recent September 24 disturbances in Leh that led to four fatalities. The administration has initiated a magisterial probe to ensure justice, while maintaining a strict prohibition on gatherings to prevent future violence.

Gupta, addressing concerns and assuring normalcy, revealed that daily life in Leh has largely resumed. Businesses have reopened, schools for younger students are operational, and public transportation is back in service. However, a vigilant approach is being taken against those disseminating inflammatory content, particularly deepfake videos aimed at disturbing public order.

In response to calls for a judicial probe, Gupta reiterated that a magisterial inquiry is underway. He appealed to local groups, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), to engage in dialogues with the central government. Gupta emphasized that open conversations could pave the way for peaceful resolutions, even as these groups condition participation on further investigations into the violence.
