The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to roll out a revamped version of Aadhaar cards featuring only a photo and QR code. This significant change aims to prevent the misuse of personal data and diminish offline verification practices that contravene current legal frameworks, as stated by a top official on Tuesday.

During an online conference, UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar emphasized the authority's intent to enhance privacy by discouraging offline verification often used by hotels and event organizers. This move, expected to undergo rule introduction in December, aligns with maintaining individual privacy while refining age verification processes.

The forthcoming app, which will phase out the mAadhaar app, promises improved standards in Aadhaar authentication, in compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. The app will facilitate users in updating their address proof and include family members who lack mobile phones, besides refining mobile number updates through face authentication. The changes anticipate completion within 18 months, aiming for feedback-driven enhancement of Aadhaar verification use cases.
