The National Commission for Women (NCW) announced it will independently hold a public hearing on crimes against women in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, after the state police refused to provide a venue. Scheduled for December 1 at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, this event underscores ongoing challenges in collaboration with local authorities.
NCW member Archana Majumdar shared that multiple requests for a suitable venue were ignored by the state police and the chief secretary, compromising the process where over 100 cases are expected to be addressed. Majumdar criticized the West Bengal police for their lack of cooperation, contrasting it with the assistance provided by police in other states.
This scenario follows previous instances of alleged non-cooperation from West Bengal's authorities, including during high-profile cases and investigative inquiries like the Sandeshkhali episode. The NCW has continued to face challenges, yet remains resolute in conducting its 'jan-sunani' for submitted and walk-in grievances.
