In a significant move to accelerate digital transformation in India’s mining sector, NMDC, the country’s largest iron ore producer, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. The collaboration aims to strengthen NMDC’s cybersecurity framework, enhance digital resilience, and integrate cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into its core operations.
The MoU was formally signed by Mr. Satyendra Rai, Executive Director (Digital Transformation), NMDC, and Prof. Ashoke De, Dean of R&D, IIT Kanpur, in the presence of Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, along with senior officials from both institutions.
A Major Leap for Safe, Smart and Automated Mining
This partnership marks a milestone for India’s mining ecosystem, as NMDC aims to expand its digital capabilities to keep pace with global best practices. As mining operations increasingly depend on automation, real-time analytics, and remote monitoring, the need for strong cybersecurity and intelligent digital systems has become essential.
Through this collaboration, NMDC and IIT Kanpur will work together on:
-
Cybersecurity risk assessments and audits to identify vulnerabilities in operational and IT systems
-
Strengthening governance, compliance and digital security policies across all mines and offices
-
AI and ML-driven solutions for mine planning, equipment health monitoring, predictive analytics and operational optimisation
-
Security operations and incident response frameworks for rapid threat detection
-
Capacity building programmes to train NMDC employees in emerging technologies
-
Joint research, pilot projects and proof-of-concept development to test innovative tech solutions
A Strong Industrial Ecosystem Backed by Academia
Speaking on the importance of this partnership, Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC, said:
“This MoU brings IIT Kanpur’s advanced research capabilities into NMDC’s extensive operational ecosystem. It will strengthen our digital defences, enhance operational intelligence, and help build a secure and future-ready technological foundation for NMDC.”
The collaboration aligns with NMDC’s broader digital agenda, which includes the adoption of smart mining systems, integrated command and control centres, drone-based surveys, and sustainable mining technologies—all requiring robust cyber protection and intelligent data-driven tools.
Driving Innovation for India’s Mining Future
IIT Kanpur, known for its cutting-edge research in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, digital forensics, and advanced computing, will serve as NMDC’s knowledge partner in building a resilient technological ecosystem. With cyber threats rising globally, especially in critical infrastructure sectors, this partnership demonstrates NMDC’s proactive strategy to secure its digital assets.
Both institutions will also explore opportunities for joint patents, publications and technology incubation, opening pathways for indigenous innovations in mining technology.
A Step Toward Future-Ready Mining
The MoU underscores NMDC’s commitment to evolving as a digitally empowered and technologically advanced mining organisation, capable of meeting future challenges while ensuring sustainable, safe and efficient operations.
