Israel is preparing to reopen the Allenby Crossing with Jordan for the transport of goods and aid on Wednesday, according to an Israeli security official.
Following a security incident in September, the border crossing has been shut to aid and goods. The incident involved a driver transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza, who opened fire, killing two Israeli military personnel before being neutralized by security forces.
The official indicated that the reopening would come with enhanced screening procedures for Jordanian drivers and truck cargo. The Allenby Bridge is a critical trade route between Jordan and Israel and the sole passage for more than 3 million Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank to access Jordan and the international community. While the crossing resumed passenger traffic shortly after the attack, it has remained closed to aid deliveries. The U.N. highlights the crossing as a crucial conduit for delivering food, tents, and other humanitarian goods into Gaza.
