Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif's Plea for Druze Security in Syria
Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif calls on the U.S. to ensure the security of Syria's Druze minority to prevent violence like that which occurred in Sweida. He advocates for internal autonomy in Syria, warning against surrendering weapons and stressing the need to rebuild trust and ensure humanitarian access.
Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif has made an earnest appeal to the United States to protect the Druze community in Syria, hoping to avoid a repetition of the violent clashes in Sweida earlier this year. The Sheikh emphasized the importance of U.S. intervention to maintain stability and uphold minority rights in Syria.
In discussions with Reuters during his visit to the U.N. in Geneva, Tarif expressed his strong belief that U.S. support could prevent further escalations of violence and reduce the necessity of Israeli involvement in the region. He also highlighted the critical role of President Trump in safeguarding minority rights across Syria.
Following intense clashes in July between Druze and Bedouin residents in Sweida, which resulted in significant loss and displacement, Tarif underscored the importance of autonomy and rebuilding trust among the population. He condemned violent government actions and called for humanitarian access to assist displaced people.
