U.S. Warns South Sudan: Lift Fees or Lose Aid

The United States has issued a stern warning to South Sudan, threatening to significantly cut foreign aid if Juba does not eliminate unauthorized fees on humanitarian shipments. This action follows repeated complaints from donors regarding such levies.

In a strongly worded statement titled 'Time to Stop Taking Advantage of the United States,' the U.S. Bureau of African Affairs criticized the South Sudanese government for imposing high fees and obstructing United Nations peacekeeping efforts. The South Sudanese humanitarian affairs minister has yet to respond to these accusations.

South Sudan, which became independent in 2011, is in turmoil, with ongoing conflict and accusations of corruption among political elites exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. U.S. officials stated a comprehensive review of aid to South Sudan could lead to substantial reductions unless immediate changes are made.
