Senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat has urged President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to retract charges in the 2015 mob lynching case of Mohammad Akhlaq. In her letter, Karat described the action as a 'politically motivated' move by the government.

Karat questioned the governor's endorsement of the decision, labeling it an attempt to undermine justice for Akhlaq, who was killed in Bisahada village following accusations of cow slaughter. She emphasized the governor's written approval to proceed with the withdrawal despite ongoing court proceedings and testimonies.

The controversial decision has raised suspicions of political motivations behind the move and prompted concerns over its implications for justice and the rule of law. Karat has called for the President's urgent intervention to reverse the governor's approval.
