Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oman on a significant visit aimed at strengthening Indo-Omani relations through the signing of an ambitious trade agreement. Warmly received by Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, Oman's Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs, Modi was welcomed with a guard of honour.
The two-day visit, marking Modi's second to the Gulf nation, commemorates 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Oman. The primary focus is the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which holds promise for deepening economic ties between the nations. Negotiations, which began in November 2023, concluded successfully, with the agreement receiving approval from the Union Cabinet in India last Friday.
Beyond the trade deal, discussions will also address enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries, covering trade, investment, energy, defence, and technology. Modi's schedule includes a meeting with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, and addressing the Indian diaspora, highlighting the significance of Oman as the third-largest GCC export destination for India.
