In a significant move on Friday, Colombia unveiled an ambitious $1.68 billion project intended to protect the nation from drone attacks carried out by illegal armed groups, according to the country's defense minister.
The country has been gripped by a six-decade-long armed conflict, leaving more than 450,000 individuals dead. The ongoing conflict involves a mix of military and police forces, leftist guerrillas, criminal gangs from demobilized right-wing paramilitaries, and notorious drug cartels.
Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez described the initiative as one of the boldest and most innovative strategies for Colombia's national security and defense in a video statement.
