The Karnataka State Election Commission has announced that elections to the five city corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority will be conducted using ballot papers, moving away from Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). This shift is scheduled post-May 25, after crucial state examinations are concluded, as confirmed by State Election Commissioner G S Sangreshi.
The decision to revert to ballot papers follows the Congress government's recommendations, aimed at rebuilding public trust in the electoral process. Commissioner Sangreshi emphasized that ballot paper usage is a globally recognized election practice, noting that countries like America also utilize it for various polls.
Responding to concerns about governmental influence, Sangreshi clarified the commission's independence, saying the decision followed careful consideration of current circumstances. Additionally, the Supreme Court recently instructed that Bengaluru's local body polls occur by June 30, following the 2020 expiration of the previous administration.
