Azerbaijan, a South Caucasus country bordering Russia and Iran, is on high alert following the arrests. The suspects, born in 2000 and 2005, were allegedly targeting the embassy with the intention of creating chaos. The nation, with a majority-Muslim population, has a history of foiling ISIS-linked plots.
This recent incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by ISIS-K, known for past high-casualty attacks, such as the 2024 Crocus City Hall attack in Moscow. The Azerbaijan government remains vigilant, with ongoing investigations and heightened security measures to combat terrorism influenced by religious hostility.
