In a significant legal verdict, Russian captain Vladimir Motin was convicted on Monday of gross negligence manslaughter following a fatal collision off the east coast of Britain last year.
The maritime accident involved Motin's Portuguese-flagged container ship, the Solong, which crashed into the anchored U.S. tanker, the Stena Immaculate, on March 10, 2025.
The collision resulted in the tragic death of 38-year-old crew member Mark Pernia from the Philippines, whose body remains missing. The landmark trial at London's Old Bailey court concluded with the conviction that underscores the responsibilities of maritime leadership.
