During a session in the Rajya Sabha, BJD member Sasmit Patra called for government action to bolster the enforcement of laws protecting vulnerable sections in India, amidst increasing violence nationwide. Patra emphasized the alarming surge in gender-based crimes, communal violence, and targeted attacks on minorities.
He pointed out the critical need for the central government's involvement due to the direct impact of these crimes on fundamental rights and internal security, although policing is a state matter. Patra cited numerous heinous crimes against women and children over the past two years as a sign of serious gaps in child protection and justice delivery.
Highlighting incidents of violence against Scheduled Tribes, Castes, and minorities, Patra expressed concern about the inadequate enforcement of constitutional safeguards. He called for measures such as fast-track courts and victim support to restore public confidence in institutions and foster social harmony.
