Wrestler-turned-police officer Jagdish Bhola gets 12 yrs jail term in drugs case

Former international wrestler and Arjuna awardee Jagdish Singh Bhola was convicted and sentenced by a special CBI court here in connection with a multi-crore drugs racket. He was sentenced to imprisonment for 12, 10 and two years in three cases by the special CBI court of N S Gill.

All the three punishments would run concurrently out of which he has already served six years in jail and will have to spend another six years behind the bars. Bhola was convicted in three cases while he was acquitted in another three cases against him and others in connection with the multi-crore drugs racket.

He had served as Punjab's Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) but was dismissed from service in 2012 after his links with the drugs racket were revealed. The Punjab Police had arrested Bhola in November 2013 in connection with a Rs 700 crore drugs racket. Subsequent police action against the mafia led to the busting of a Rs 6,000 crore drugs racket.

Bhola was the kingpin of the drug network which was diverting precursor chemicals for medicinal purposes to illegal factories in Himachal Pradesh that manufactured synthetic drugs like 'Ice' and was supplying the synthetic drugs to the international market in Europe, Canada and the United States. International drugs dealer Anoop Singh Kahlon and industrialist Jagjit Singh Chahal were also convicted in the multi-crore drugs racket, which hogged the limelight in the last few years with the names of politicians, industrialists and police officers being linked to the racket.

"We will challenge the conviction in the Punjab and Haryana High Court," Bhola's lawyer said. In March 2013, the Punjab Police had claimed that international boxers Ram Singh and Vijender Singh took heroin from Canada-based drug dealers Kahlon and Rocky for personal consumption between December 2012 and February 2013.

While Ram Singh was arrested by the Punjab Police in April 2013, Vijender Singh, who was an under-training DSP in the Haryana Police at that time, was questioned in this regard. The police had alleged that Vijender Singh consumed heroin 12 times. He, however, got a clean chit in the matter later.
