Iran's Assembly of Experts Nears Consensus on Supreme Leader Successor

The Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting Iran's next supreme leader following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is reportedly nearing a consensus on his successor. According to Assembly member Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri, a majority agreement has been achieved although some procedural obstacles remain.

On Saturday, it was noted that the assembly intends to meet within a single day to finalize the decision. While Iranian media reported minor disagreements among members on whether an in-person meeting is necessary, some clerics like Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasir have suggested remote alternatives given the extraordinary circumstances.

The urgency around the selection process is intensified by ongoing military tensions in the region. Strikes from Israeli and U.S. forces have targeted Iranian assets, particularly amplifying concerns about the vulnerability of high-profile Iranian political gatherings. The selected leader is touted to be one that is disliked by Iran's enemies, hinting at a continuation of hard-line policies.
