In a devastating turn of events, several explosions rocked northeastern Nigeria's Borno state on Monday night. Eyewitnesses reported hearing blasts in Maiduguri, the state capital, a city that has endured over a decade of insurgency led by homegrown extremist group Boko Haram.
The explosions struck at strategic locations, including the entrance of Maiduguri's University Teaching Hospital and two bustling markets, Post Office and Monday Market. Authorities are managing numerous casualties, though the exact number of victims remains unconfirmed, according to Sirajo Abdullahi of the National Emergency Management Agency in Maiduguri.
With no group claiming responsibility for the attacks, tensions remain high in an area already beleaguered by security challenges. However, suspicions point toward Boko Haram, who continue to launch aggressive assaults on military installations. Borno Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has condemned the bombings, emphasizing the need for community vigilance and cooperation with security forces.
