Crackdown Intensifies: Illegal Mining Sees Record Seizures in Jammu and Kashmir

In a determined move against illegal mining, Jammu and Kashmir authorities have seized more than 13,600 vehicles over two years, as reflected in official data. The intensified crackdown also saw 446 FIRs registered, underscoring a proactive governmental stance.

Data from 2024-25 reported 6,219 vehicle seizures, while 2025-26 figures surpassed expectations with 7,473 vehicles, suggesting a significant uptick in enforcement. Notably, FIRs rose from 212 to 234, indicative of increased vigilance and regulatory measures, officials noted.

Kupwara led the 2025-26 vehicle seizures with 859, while Budgam excelled in FIR counts with a substantial 51 cases. Comparing previous years, trends reveal an ongoing focus on curbing illegal riverbed mining through strategic, collaborative efforts.
