The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has ramped up its inquiry into terrorism-linked activities by filing a fifth supplementary chargesheet against Areeb Majeed, a former engineering student from Thane, in the 2014 ISIS association case. Majeed, who faces alleged terror activities trials, is now additionally charged with funding terrorist operations.
Presented before the special NIA court under Section 17 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), this provision focuses on penalties for terror financing. On Friday, the court acknowledged the chargesheet, instructing that a copy be provided to Majeed. Details have emerged of Majeed venturing to Iraq in May 2014 with colleagues who intended to join ISIS.
An arrest on November 28, 2014, upon Majeed's return from Turkey, confirmed his detention despite earlier martyrdom claims. Recently, courts have pursued associates of Majeed, including issuing a proclamation against three individuals who allegedly departed India in 2014 to join ISIS, signifying potential property confiscation.
