In a significant naval encounter, more than 100 pro-Palestinian activists aboard aid ships heading to Gaza were taken to Crete by Greek authorities after Israeli forces seized their vessels in international waters near Greece.
The flotilla, part of a second Global Sumud attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, faced arrest and redirection as part of Israel’s ongoing enforcement of its Gaza blockade. The flotilla originally departed from Barcelona and was meant to break through the blockade.
The incident has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Spain's foreign minister demanding the release of a Spanish national arrested by Israel, and joint concerns expressed by Germany and Italy. Meanwhile, a U.S. State Department statement warned of consequences against those supporting the flotilla, fuelling further discourse on the complex geopolitics of aid to Gaza.
