In a plea for urgent intervention, several student organizations representing indigenous hill communities in Manipur have called on the Indian government to address a deteriorating humanitarian crisis. Their appeal marks the third anniversary of ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023.
The groups, including the Gangte Students' Organisation and Hmar Students' Association, highlighted ongoing challenges such as large-scale displacement, destruction, and violence in a memorandum to national authorities. They demand expedited political dialogue and a lasting solution, emphasizing the need for a separate administrative arrangement.
Further concerns include systemic neglect, sexual violence, and looting of arms, with calls for time-bound investigations and accountability. The organizations stress the importance of immediate humanitarian intervention and political commitment to restore peace and address underlying issues.
