Call for Sarna Religious Code: Jharkhand's Push for Tribal Recognition

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has made an earnest plea to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocating for the inclusion of the Sarna religion in the census data for tribal populations. Soren emphasizes the need for a separate Sarna Religious Code, reasoning that it would differentiate tribes from other religious groups, thereby safeguarding their constitutional rights.

In previous census data, nearly 50 lakh individuals from 21 states identified as Sarna, despite the absence of a designated category. Soren insists that acknowledging the Sarna religion in upcoming census efforts would better reflect the distinct traditions followed by this community, which includes unique rituals and nature worship.

While introducing new classifications could complicate operations, Soren argues the long-term benefits of accurate data are paramount for creating effective welfare policies. He underscores the importance of recognizing tribal identity, especially when calls for a Uniform Civil Code are growing. The Chief Minister's requests are rooted in ensuring precise data to foster balanced development across regions.
