Escalating Tensions: Nigerians Seek Repatriation Amid South Africa Protests
Amid escalating protests in South Africa against foreigners, at least 130 Nigerian citizens have sought repatriation assistance from their government. The Nigerian foreign minister highlights concerns over the safety of Nigerians amid violence and the deaths of two citizens, urging South African cooperation in pursuing justice.
Nigerian Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu announced that at least 130 Nigerians in South Africa have requested government assistance for repatriation. This follows recent protests targeting foreigners in cities like Pretoria and Johannesburg, amidst growing concerns that these tensions may lead to further violence.
Violence against Nigerians in South Africa has drawn condemnation from Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa called for comprehensive investigations into the deaths of two Nigerians allegedly at the hands of security officials and demanded full accountability if wrongful actions are confirmed.
With more protests scheduled, the Nigerian government is monitoring developments closely. Officials have summoned South Africa's High Commissioner in Abuja and are collaborating with diplomatic missions in South Africa to mitigate risks facing Nigerians.
