A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Mumbai Police to address a significant scandal involving alleged fake birth certificates in the city. Over 87,000 such certificates are thought to have been issued between 2024 and 2026 by manipulating official records, according to city officials.
The Mumbai Crime Branch initiated an investigation after receiving numerous complaints about similar fraudulent registrations. The importance of the issue led Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti to order the creation of the SIT to ensure a thorough examination of the reported offences.
The SIT will be led by the joint commissioner of police (crime) and will include senior officers from various branches. This move follows allegations from BJP leader Kirit Somaiya that such fake certificates were reportedly issued to illegal immigrants, including Bangladeshi and Rohingya populations, as part of a larger scam.
