The Gujarat High Court has delivered a crucial verdict by dismissing a plea submitted by Narayan Sai, son of the self-styled godman Asaram, to halt his life sentence in a 2001 rape case.
Sai's appeal against his conviction, handed down by a Surat court, is ongoing in the high court. The division bench, comprising Justices Ilesh Vora and R T Vachhani, stated that due to the seriousness of the offense, they found it challenging to ascertain a prima facie chance of acquittal.
Throughout the process, Sai has been uncooperative, demonstrated by his numerous bail applications and tactics to delay proceedings. The Surat court sentenced Sai to life in 2019 for multiple charges including rape and conspiracy.
