The Supreme Court convened a Full Court reference on Wednesday to honor the memory of esteemed members of the judiciary. Among those commemorated was the late Vijay Kumar Jhanji, former acting Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, who passed away earlier this year.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant highlighted Justice Jhanji's adherence to the principle that institutions must prevail over individuals. His landmark judgment protected the residency status of daughters in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring they didn't lose it upon marrying non-residents.
The court also remembered late senior advocates ADN Rao, Mukul Gupta, and S Balakrishnan. Notably, Rao was instrumental in environmental law, assisting in several landmark cases over three decades. This solemn gathering underscored the lasting impact these legal luminaries had on the judiciary.
