The National Crime Records Bureau's latest report paints a troubling picture of crime in Delhi, with the city leading far ahead in national theft statistics for 2024. According to the data, almost three-quarters of all recorded thefts occurred in Delhi, which tallied an alarming 1,80,973 cases throughout the year.
On average, Delhi witnessed about 497 theft cases daily, comprising a staggering 73.3 percent of the nation's total theft cases. This figure puts the Indian capital miles ahead of other major metropolitan areas, with Mumbai reporting 10,854 cases, Bengaluru with 9,229 cases, and Jaipur close behind with 9,051.
In spite of Delhi's massive numbers, the NCRB's findings do reveal a silver lining. Across India, property crimes, which included a total of 2,80,867 cases in the year, fell by 14.4 percent compared to figures from 2023. Yet, thefts remain the dominant crime, forming 87.9 percent of property-related offences. It's a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in addressing crime in major urban centers.
