The Kerala district administration has embarked on one of the largest eviction operations in recent memory, dismantling 88 buildings constructed on encroached land along the Panniyar riverbanks. This action comes after the Kerala High Court ordered these illegal structures—comprised of both residential and commercial properties—to be cleared.
On Thursday, the demolition drive commenced under tight security measures, with prohibitory orders issued within the Santhanpara police limits. Approximately 200 police personnel are ensuring the operation proceeds smoothly. The issue dates back two years, involving litigation over the unauthorized occupation of revenue land.
The Supreme Court dismissed the building owners' appeals, allowing the demolition to proceed. In total, 56 individuals own the affected structures, with 33 houses among them. Arrangements, including rented accommodations, have been made for 15 displaced families. Commercial buildings were the first to fall, with the remaining demolitions scheduled to occur in phases over the coming days.
