The Maharashtra government has taken decisive action to strengthen enforcement of the PCPNDT Act by reconstituting its inspection and monitoring committee. The revamped 18-member panel, announced on Thursday, is aimed at curbing illegal sex determination tests in the state.
Guided by the Public Health and Family Welfare Minister, the committee includes influential members such as the Maharashtra State Women's Commission chairperson and women legislators. They are tasked with ensuring implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act and inspecting relevant centers rigorously.
Focused on maintaining gender balance, the committee is empowered to recommend sealing sonography machines if violations are detected. According to Vasai MLA Sneha Dubey-Pandit, this move prioritizes both strict law enforcement and public education on the critical issue of female foeticide.
