In a significant diplomatic move, President Santiago Peña of Paraguay arrived in Taiwan on Thursday, marking his inaugural visit to the island, which China claims as its own territory. Paraguay remains one of Taiwan’s staunch supporters, standing as the last South American country to recognize Taipei.

Despite a solid trade relationship with China, Paraguay has reaffirmed its diplomatic commitment to Taiwan. Leading a business delegation, President Peña focuses on strengthening ties in agriculture and finance sectors. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te is expected to honor Peña with a military welcome on Friday.

This visit takes place against the backdrop of escalating pressure from Beijing, which regularly dispatches military assets toward Taiwan in an effort to assert dominance. Nevertheless, Taiwan continues to fortify its international presence, highlighted by recent diplomatic engagements in Africa.
