Former Union minister Ram Naik has praised the Narendra Modi government's recent approval to amend the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971. This amendment aims to offer 'Vande Mataram', the national song, the same legal protection currently enjoyed by the national anthem, 'Jana Gana Mana'.
Naik, who has long advocated for the equal status of 'Vande Mataram', emphasized the necessity of this amendment, noting that the national song had not been legally treated as a matter of national honor, despite being recognized in constitutional proceedings. He urged Parliament members to set aside political differences and pass the amendment unanimously, showcasing their collective patriotism.
The proposed changes would make any obstruction to the singing of 'Vande Mataram' a punishable offense, akin to existing protections for the national anthem, flag, and Constitution. The initiative arrives on the heels of the Union Cabinet's approval of the proposal, aiming to preserve the national song's integrity.
