Eviction Threat to Centuries-old Yamuna Riverbank Culture

Generations of families living along the Yamuna River in Delhi face eviction due to a government notice. These residents, who perform age-old rituals and uphold cultural traditions, fear the loss of their homes and heritage. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority has issued eviction notices citing safety concerns due to the flood risk.

As smoke from funeral pyres rises above Nigambodh Ghat, the rhythmic chants of priests performing the Yamuna 'aarti' echo, signaling an impending cultural loss for families residing along the Yamuna River in Delhi. These families, who have preserved ancestral traditions traced back to the Mahabharata era, now face eviction.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority has ordered the clearance of around 310 dwellings in Yamuna Bazar. Residents have 15 days to vacate due to threats posed by recurring floods in the protected O-Zone area, according to authorities. This decision has caused alarm among the families dedicated to maintaining historical and cultural ties to the Yamuna riverbank.

Sunil Sharma, a priest from the Yamuna Ghat Panda Association, highlights the spiritual importance of this land. Residents like 47-year-old Surender express fears about losing their livelihood and tradition. With historical significance, as noted by historian Swapna Liddle, the threat looms over this vibrant culture. Despite knowing the flood risks, the residents are intent on serving and preserving the river's traditions for future generations.
