In a crackdown against peddling of drugs, a couple and three people were arrested from different parts of Jamshedpur with brown sugar worth Rs 3.50 lakh, police said on Monday. Senior Superintendent of Police (East Singhbhum) Piyush Pandey said they have recovered 175 small packets of the contraband weighing 26.84 grams, which was estimated to cost Rs 3.50 lakh. Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Santosh Singh and his wife Ayesha Khatoon with 124 packets of brown sugar from Gandhinagar Basti under the Burmamines police station limit, the police officer said. Based on their interrogation, police apprehended Gaurav Kumar and Amit Kumar with 20 and 19 packets of brown sugar from the Govindpur police station limits. Another peddler, Sanjay Goswami, was nabbed with 12 packets of brown sugar from the Mango police station limit, SSP Pandey said, adding all the arrested have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
