The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially registered an FIR concerning the alleged murder of Chandranath Rath, who was an aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Previously managed by the state police, the case has attracted national attention following a formal request from the state government for federal intervention.
Chandranath Rath was shot on May 6, just two days following the West Bengal Assembly Polls results. This incident occurred publicly on a road in the Madhyamgram area, where Rath sustained critical injuries and was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. The case has intensified political tensions in the state.
The West Bengal Police arrested three individuals from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in connection to the murder. The arrests were facilitated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), using digital tracking and UPI transaction evidence. Those arrested face charges including murder and possession of illegal arms.
