Delhi High Court Urges Action Over Suicides: A Call for Direct Intervention

The Delhi High Court declined a PIL seeking measures to curb suicides, urging the petitioner to contact government authorities instead. Acknowledging the rise in cases, the court suggested opening an NGO for awareness and support, rather than immediate judicial intervention, emphasizing societal and governmental roles.

On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) that called for interventions to prevent suicides, advising the petitioner to directly engage with relevant authorities. The bench, led by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, acknowledged the uptick in suicide cases but questioned the judiciary's role in issuing directives for such societal issues.

The petitioner had requested the establishment of an institutional framework and support systems to address and prevent suicidal tendencies. The bench highlighted the lack of a current platform for distressed individuals to express their concerns, but concluded that judiciary involvement wasn't necessary.

The court encouraged the petitioner to start a non-governmental organization (NGO) to help reach out to affected individuals. It suggested that the petitioner make formal representations to either the central or state government, who are then responsible for making a suitable decision on the matter.
