Meghalaya's Deputy Chief Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, announced on Wednesday that the state government will deploy additional security personnel to Lapangap village on the Assam border. This measure aims to safeguard uninterrupted farming activities amid alleged disturbances by Karbi groups.
Residents from Lapangap in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills marched to the secretariat, demanding protection as they claimed repeated harassment and crop destruction by people from Assam's Karbi Anglong district. Dhar assured the delegation of government efforts to ensure peace and protection for local farmers.
The ongoing discussions focus on the livelihood of Lapangap farmers rather than the interstate border dispute. Discussions among deputy commissioners from both states are set to continue, with Meghalaya urging Assam to appoint a regional committee chair for further negotiations.
