The Maharashtra state government has unveiled plans to build a new jail complex on an 11-acre plot in Mankhurd, eastern Mumbai. This development aims to alleviate the current overcrowding in existing city prisons.
A special operation led to the removal of over 1,200 unauthorised huts to free up the land. Mumbai Suburban Collector Saurabh Katiyar oversaw this significant development, and the land has been formally handed over to the Mumbai Central Prison superintendent.
This initiative follows directions by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aiming to address the growing inmate population. By establishing the new complex, Mumbai expects enhanced security and improved administrative management.
