A Jain nun was killed and two other women ascetics were seriously injured after a speeding car hit them when they were crossing a road in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district on Wednesday, police said.

The accident took place under the Civil Lines police station limits when the three nuns were on their way from Katra Jain temple to Jhiria on foot, police said.

The impact of the car was so severe that one of the nuns, identified as Shrutmati Mata, a resident of Sagar, died on the spot.

Her companions Upsham Mati Mata from Tamil Nadu and Aryika Mata from Jabalpur were admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital here where they are undergoing treatment, police said.

Rewa Superintendent of Police Gurukaran Singh said the car driver fled from the spot but was later arrested near Jabalpur.

Rewa Divisional Commissioner B S Jamod, Collector Narendra Kumar Suryavanshi and other senior officials visited the hospital.

Police said the three Jain nuns were staying at the Katra Jain temple for the last three months after being invited by members of the local Jain community.
