Despite soaring temperatures, census workers in Delhi have accomplished a major milestone, surveying 95% of the city's digitally charted housing blocks. The ongoing month-long initiative is pivotal for the comprehensive census effort, having launched on May 16 and set to wrap up by June 14.
With over 45,000 housing listing blocks (HLBs) within the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's jurisdiction, each block encompasses 180-200 households. Teams are currently conducting exhaustive door-to-door visits across 44,435 of the city's 45,791 blocks. Particularly noteworthy progress has been made in the New Delhi district where all 585 blocks are complete, alongside notable efforts in the densely populated North-East Delhi.
Authorities report satisfaction with efforts in Central North, South West, North West, West, East, and Central districts. Enumerators are currently active in North West, West, East, Central, and South West Delhi, collectively addressing thousands of additional households to ensure comprehensive data capture.
This initial phase includes 33 detailed questions from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Queries range from structural attributes and occupancy to detailed amenities, furnishing a robust demographic and socio-economic profile. Upon completion, the focus will shift to demographic data collection in February 2027, underlining the census's pivotal role in policy making and planning.
