Facebook Account Impersonating Cleric Faces Legal Action for Incitement

A Facebook user impersonating Shia cleric Maulana Mirza Mohammad Yasoob Abbas has been charged for sowing community discord. Abbas condemned the misuse of his name and called for public restraint. Legal proceedings have commenced under specific sections of the law for public mischief and IT Act violations.

A social media account masquerading as Shia cleric Maulana Mirza Mohammad Yasoob Abbas has led to legal charges for allegedly fostering discord between communities, according to police on Tuesday.

The complaint was initiated by Abbas himself, who stated that a Facebook user exploited his identity to spread misleading messages online. Abbas, who is also the general secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, urged people to disregard these false messages.

The unidentified individual faces charges under public mischief statutes and the Information Technology Act at Chowk Police Station. In a video message, Abbas expressed his dismay over the fabricated statements linked to him on social media just before Eid-al-Adha.

He called upon the state government to take decisive action against the impersonator and emphasized the need for maintaining communal peace.
